Instead of participating in these conflicting talks, people divert their energy to other important issues. The change that we desire to bring about in our society can only be realized if we can decide to engage in difficult conversations.
Avoid engaging in competitive conversations where necessary. If you come across people who are arguing about the presidential seat or about abortion, you should stay away from such a debate. Such conversations are only political. Ensure that you deliberate to discuss things which are useful to you and avoid any argumentative conversation while pushing your partners to do the same too. For you to successfully engage in a difficult conversation, you should take a deep breath first. Give the other party enough time to speak and ensure that they are through with their speech. You would wish to ask them whether they are done speaking. People who take a breath before they talk are able to control adverse emotions and speak in low tones.
Learn to ask questions since they are a vehicle to a positive conversation. Questions neutralizes any heating emotion between parties engaging in argumentative conversations. When you ask this question, you will have an opportunity to relax as you take a deep breath. If an opportunity is granted for your opponent to expound more on what they are emphasizing, you will get a better understanding. After you have clearly understood the other party’s points, it will be easy for you to get a better understanding. As long as you are open-minded when asking any question o the other party, they will appreciate the fact that you are willing to listen to them.
It is wise that you look for a way through which you will end a difficult chat. One party has to agree to disagree here. For instance, making a joke is a better way of concluding the conversation. This will be a proof that you cannot become enemies just because you have disagreed on an issue. The most important thing to do is to practice active listening as a communication skill.
